Julie Merrifield spoke on behalf of Bellarine Women’s Workshop (BWW) and gave us a wonderful insight into some of the group’s activities, at the Bellarine Women's Network July 2025 Get-together.

BWW is a safe inclusive space for creating and connecting, It’s a space where women come together to empower one another by gaining practical and creative skills or to simply have a cuppa and a chat.

Based in Portarlington at the Guide Hall (next to the football oval), BWW meet every 2nd Thursday and one Saturday per month for a 3-hour session of crafting, woodcraft and creating.

Activities are very broad. The ‘veranda mob’ experiment with wood and learn to use hand and power tools. Crafters work inside. Subcommittees research and prepare projects that are suitable for the venue. Members are encouraged to bring along UFO’s (unfinished objects).

A few small grants have enabled the group to purchase equipment such as an overlocker, sewing machines, woodworking tools and power tools.

Community involvement is very much part of the group and include Biggest Morning Tea, Oaks Day lunch, Scarecrow competition run by Flying Brick and St Leonards Christmas Yarn bombing.

Many of the ladies create items for donation to local groups such as Our Village (formally Geelong Mums) and Surf Coast Wildlife Rescue.

Membership is $45, Pensioners $40, plus $5 a session. Potential members can ‘try before you buy’ - 3 sessions for just $5.
