Artisans of Australia Gallery

BWN Guest Speaker November 2024

Helen Meikle, Founder and Director of the Artisans of Australia gallery,
gave an inspiring talk about her remarkable career and her passion project: creating a magnificent space on the Bellarine to celebrate and showcase the work of local artists. Her story is a testament to the power of creativity, community, and determination in building something truly special.

Born in the UK, Helen spent her early years with her adoptive parents, often
visiting galleries and bookshops. She credits this happy and enriching childhood with sparking her lifelong appreciation for art and the work of artisans.

Originally enrolling in an Archaeology degree, Helen transitioned to Psychology, which opened the door to incredible career and travel opportunities. After being headhunted by Deakin University, her initial three-month contract in Australia turned into a permanent life here. Her parents soon followed, settling in Australia as well. Despite her varied career path, Helen's true passion has always been creating and collaborating with other artists.

Over the past five years, she has dedicated herself to building Artisans of Australia, a vibrant gallery in Curlewis, offering an inspiring space for artists and art lovers alike.

We were captivated by Helen's life story and the vision behind her endeavors. Currently, the gallery features the Brushscapes Exhibition, showcasing the works of talented local artists Anne Arrowsmith, Renae Chapman, and George-Ann Gunn. This stunning exhibition runs until Monday, 2 December—so don’t miss the chance to visit this weekend!

In addition to exhibitions, the gallery hosts a shop filled with work from many local artists, along with a café that promises fantastic coffee and delicious treats. Conveniently located near the big intersection before the Drysdale Bypass, it’s a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts.
